New ACC Library Magazines: December 2012
We love magazines, as they provide the latest exciting craft, art, and design inspiration every month, so the American Craft Council Library has added some new subscriptions to its shelves.
We recently received a donation of back issues of Wallpaper* from Bryan Starry of the local design firm Split Image Graphics. Wallpaper proved so popular among staff, we decided to add a current subscription to our collection. Covering design, interiors, architecture, fashion, and art, Wallpaper* is a global design destination, championing the best in contemporary lifestyles. The December 2012 issue, for example, contains articles about a midcentury penthouse in Toronto, the Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, designers making doghouses, and trends in timepieces.
American Craft’s creative directors, Mary K. Baumann and Will Hopkins of Hopkins-Baumann, just donated many issues of FMR, an Italian art magazine published six times yearly by the Franco Maria Ricci publishing house since 1982. We have issues in Italian and English from the 1980s. A truly beautiful and iconic magazine, it is large-scale and glossy, with outstanding photographs of art.
Modern is a magazine that examines 20th century and contemporary design from all angles. Each issue profiles creators – their work, personalities, inspirations, and ideas – and explores styles. Modern also profiles curators, collectors, and dealers who are behind today’s decorative arts market. In the Winter 2013 issue there is a discussion of the artist jewelry market, a view into collectors’ homes in New York City, Chicago, and Toronto, and an article about four designers who live and work in the Hudson River Valley.
The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have a new idea and culture magazine - thirty two. Katie Eggers, founder and editor, writes: “We strive to create a publication that aesthetically reflects the intellectual richness of our region, celebrating the beauty of paper and its unique ability to showcase gorgeous photography and minimalist design.” With the subtitle of “Minnesota Minds Exploring Our Times,” the Fall 2012 issue has an article about the burgeoning heritage goods industry in Minnesota, a perspective on art and activism, and a writer’s experience in the oil fields of North Dakota.
If you come to the Twin Cities, stop by the ACC Library to see these and other resources. We have about 100 magazine subscriptions, so there will definitely be something new every time you visit!
A weekly shout out to the printed word, From the Stacks highlights what's new and what's loved in the American Craft Council Library.
