Carole Loeffler began making Granny Graffiti in 2018 at Tuesday Tea and Textiles, a Philadelphia storefront offering community, warmth, and refuge. Moved by a young man who often said “stay strong,” she cut the phrase from felt, glued it to a vintage doily, and hung it on a telephone pole. The doily’s domestic associations lent the message tenderness. Loeffler went on to stitch affirmations throughout the city as small offerings of reassurance. The project continues to appear in response to moments of collective need.
