2019 Emerging Voices artist Diedrick Brackens is a Los Angeles-based artist working in the medium of textiles. He received his BFA from the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas, and his MFA in textiles from California College of the Arts, Oakland, California. He is an assistant professor and program head of the fiber department at California State University Long Beach. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the New Museum, Various Small Fires, the Ulrich Museum of Art, and Johansson Projects. He was recently featured in the fourth iteration of Made in L.A., the Hammer Museum at UCLA’s biennial exhibit showcasing emerging and unsung artists living and working in Los Angeles. In 2019, he became the first recipient of the Marciano Artadia Award and in 2018 he was awarded both the Wein Prize by the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Textile Society of America’s Brandford/Elliott Award for Excellence in Fiber Art. Brackens’s work is in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
