Michael Hurwitz
Furniture maker, multiple NEA award recipient, and a 2014 American Craft Council Fellow, Michael Hurwitz has been creating studio furniture for the last 35 years. As an early high school graduate that excelled in three-dimensional fabrications like metalworking and woodworking, Hurwitz took advantage of his time before starting college by exploring options for apprenticeships. An interest in music led him to search for guitar makers, which led him to a musical instrument program at Boston University. Hurwitz attended, graduating in 1979 with his BFA in woodworking. Inspired by his two long trips to Japan to study woodworking and lacquer in the late 80s/early 90s and again in the late 90s, Hurwitz makes work that is graceful and deceptive in its simplicity. A classic silhouette will hide complex, meticulous designs and carved detailing. Hurwitz’s work is included in public collections all over the country, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of Art, Smithsonian, and the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. His work also graces many private collections including that of artist Martin Puryear and actress Glenn Close.
