Sheila Hicks
Born in 1934 in Hastings, Nebraska, Sheila Hicks has been at the forefront of textile design and sculpture for over four decades. She attended Syracuse University (1952-54) and Yale University (BFA, 1957; MFA, 1959). In addition to an active career as a consultant and designer for firms around the globe, more than 60 of her works have been commissioned and completed for private and corporate buildings in 18 countries; her installations can be seen worldwide, including in the National Assembly, Paris; the Binnenhof, The Hague; and King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Her work is also in the collection of dozens of museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Rhode Island School of Design (1984) and was decorated by the French government with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1996). Sheila Hicks lives in Paris, where she has maintained an atelier since 1964. She was inducted into the American Craft Council College of Fellows in 1983, and received the ACC Gold Medal in 1997.
