Craft Desert presents Becoming Heirlooms, an exhibition exploring how craft and design objects hold memories, register lived experience, and become markers of our shared histories.
Presented in conjunction with Handwork 2026, Becoming Heirlooms brings together new works by ten artists whose practices address inheritance in its broadest sense. Through ceramics, jewelry, fiber, paper, wood, found and repurposed materials, and other forms of contemporary craft and design, the artists consider what we inherit from families, communities, cultures, political systems, and the built and natural environments—and what we choose to carry forward.
The exhibition begins with the idea that an heirloom need not be an antique or a treasured possession passed through a single family. Instead, Becoming Heirlooms asks how objects made today might become the heirlooms of a collective future: receptacles for memories, experiences, values, contradictions, and histories that extend beyond individual ownership. Stories of migration and displacement, environmental change, border life, family, religion, illness, grief, and belonging emerge throughout the exhibition. Some works preserve memories through familiar materials and inherited techniques; others confront forms of inheritance that are unwanted, contested, or difficult to carry. Together, they reveal the crafted object as more than a thing—as a witness to time and place and a means of connecting individual experience to a larger human story.
At its core, Becoming Heirlooms considers the moment when a crafted object transcends authorship and utility to become a site of collective feeling. The works become gathering points for empathy, reflection, and recognition, making tangible the ways personal histories intersect with broader cultural, environmental, and political realities. Becoming Heirlooms features new works by Diana Benavidez, Matt Hebert, Michael Hernandez, Soyeon Kim, Christine Lee, Anna Mayer, Kaiya Rainbolt, Phil Rowland, India Thompson, and Georgina Treviño.
