The Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show will take place in May in Sheridan, Wyoming.

The Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show and the World Leather Debut return this May 12 to 17, bringing artists, toolmakers, and leather enthusiasts from around the world to the historic Old West town of Sheridan, Wyoming.

Founded in 1996 and organized and hosted by the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal, the Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show has grown into a major leather industry gathering. Today, it hosts over 70 vendors offering everything from hides and tools to machines and finished work such as saddles, tack, belts, wallets, and handbags.

Spread across the Sheridan College campus, the show’s layout encourages exploration, with a “Sheridan Passport” guiding visitors from booth to booth for a chance to win raffle prizes donated by the vendors, including leather and leatherwork-related items.

At the center of the gathering is the World Leather Debut, an exhibition showcasing leatherwork as fine art. Featuring up to 180 entries from international artists, many pieces take more than a year to complete. “To walk into the Debut each year … is to be completely and utterly transported into a higher realm of the craft,” said organizer Charil Reis, who is also the owner and editor of the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal.

Workshops are one of the event’s key draws, with 88 classes taught by 35 instructors. Covering all skill levels, the sessions cover topics ranging from saddle making and floral carving to handbag construction and machine use. The trade show also features vendors such as Barry King Tools and Weaver Leather Supply

The show’s biggest draw remains its atmosphere. “The energy—everyone just seems so excited and happy to be together,” Reis says.

The week of events culminates with Sheridan Honors Night, a free event featuring the World Leather Debut awards, which spans 16 categories, among them braided items, saddles, and cowboy boots, as well as two youth categories and the Al and Ann Stohlman Awards for Achievement in Leathercraft.

Additional highlights include a screening of I Am Only A Craftsman, a documentary following celebrated leather artists Jim Jackson of Wyoming and Taka Otsuka of Japan.

“We hope people leave feeling inspired—not just by the artistry on display, but by the generosity of knowledge-sharing that makes this community so special,” says Reis. “Whether you’re a lifelong maker or simply curious about the craft, this show reminds you how meaningful it is to create something with your own hands.”

Before you go!

We believe that making creates a meaningful world, and we hope you do, too. Deeply researched and impactful journalism on the craft community is in short supply. At the same time, being featured in craft-centered media and articles can have a major effect on a maker’s or artist’s livelihood, particularly those who are just starting in their career. You can help support our mission and the work of makers around the country by becoming a member or by making a gift today.

Thank you!
