Embroidery Sampler Workshop
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
Houston, Texas
April 18, 2026
Join current resident and fiber artist Candace Hicks to create a dynamic embroidery sampler. The history of embroidery is filled with political engagement, resistance to oppression, and preservation of otherwise-suppressed narratives. Discover how Hicks’s practice unites text and fiber, often exploring feminist concerns, adding to the long history of protest art. Workshop participants will learn about the history and significance of samplers, including contemporary interpretations, and then practice techniques for pattern transfers, basic stitches, and tips for designing layouts in a sample book. By the end of the workshop, you will leave with a complete sample book, an original work highlighting your favorite stitch, and the skills to continue your embroidery journey. No prior sewing or embroidery experience is necessary. Supplies will be provided.
