This is Melissa Joseph’s first solo exhibition at Charles Moffett gallery since she joined the stable in 2025. The title, Casserole Culture, comes from a name which Joseph has been thinking about for while when trying to put a name to her experience of growing up in rural Pennsylvania capturing the hardy, resilient, and community-minded nature of her surroundings.

Joseph, who was born to an Irish American mother from Pittsburgh and a father from India, explores in her works how our own memories, families and experiences shape who we are.

Melissa’s vast, tenderly soft, felt paintings explore themes of person and place, while also drawing the viewer in to feel their own sense of emotion and connection to family, life and love. Working off of old photographs, she nods at hints of who is there or what may have been. Even though there are not many people featured in these loving scenes, we feel their presence and their place everywhere.
