Playing with Fire: Enameling on Copper Workshop

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
Houston, Texas
July 18, 2026

Discover the magic of enameling in this beginner-friendly workshop, where you’ll create several finished copper samples that can be transformed into pendants or earrings! Enameling is a centuries-old technique of fusing powdered glass onto metal, creating glossy, durable, and often colorful surfaces. This process is popular for jewelry, vessels, and decorative objects, with different enameling methods producing a variety of colors, patterns, and textures. The result is a unique piece that reflects the maker’s creativity and craftsmanship.

Workshop participants will learn how to safely and effectively handle a butane torch, and how to clean and prep copper sheet metal for optimal glass adhesion. Then they will explore dry-sift stencil techniques to layer powdered enamels, creating rich colors and depth. By the end of the class, students will have the option to make any of their samples into finished jewelry pieces by attaching jump rings or earring hooks.

This workshop is beginner friendly; no previous metalsmithing experience is needed. Closed-toe shoes and natural fiber clothing are required for safety. Note: the sifting and stenciling processes work best with steady hands!
