Kay Sekimachi
Born in 1926 in San Francisco, Kay Sekimachi’s objects are at once simple yet crafted with astounding detail. Her work, which started as weavings and wall hangings, has evolved into many different and distinct permutations. She often creates new versions of familiar shapes and forms, such as her woven boxes, which she began making in the 1970s, or her ethereal flax and loosely woven baskets and bowls. She attended California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland from 1946 to 1949. Since the 1960s, her fiber work has been exhibited extensively in the United States, Europe, and Asia. She has mounted solo exhibitions at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, California, and at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. Kay Sekimachi lives and works in Berkeley, California. Until his death in 2003, Sekimachi was married to woodturner and fellow ACC Gold Medalist Bob Stocksdale. She received the American Craft Council’s Gold Medal in 2002.
