Paula Winokur in her studio

Born in 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Paula Winokur is a ceramic artist known for her porcelain sculptures. Winokur received her BFA and BSEd from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia in 1958. She completed a summer ceramics program at Alfred University in New York the same year. While at school, Winokur met her future husband, Robert, who was also at Tyler studying ceramics. Paula and Robert were married in 1958 and have maintained a shared ceramics studio for more than 50 years. The two ultimately settled in Horsham, Pennsylvania, in the 1970s after both landed teaching positions at nearby universities. Paula accepted a position at Arcadia University in 1973, working there as a professor of ceramics and fine arts until her retirement in 2003. She works exclusively in porcelain – drawn to the clay body for its color and durability. Much of her work taps into these qualities to depict abstracted arctic landscapes that evoke our polar regions. She has exhibited widely and has been collected by museums around the world – notably the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Contemporary Art. In addition to her fine art practice, Winokur has created tiles for private residences and offices along the East Coast. She was selected to complete an oral history interview for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in 2011 and was the 2003 Professor of the Year at Arcadia University. Paula Winokur was elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2002.
