Rebecca Medel

Rebecca Medel

Rebecca Medel was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1947. For many years, Medel has used a knotted netting technique as the basis for all her fiber work. Known for her evanescent grid-like installations of knotted threads, Rebecca Medel explores time, space, metaphysics, mathematics, and symbolism in her works - searching for a structure on the brink of being physically supportable. She earned her BFA from Arizona State University and MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles before becoming a professor at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Her work has been in group exhibitions nationally and internationally. In 2005, Medel began working with digitally printed designs that she alters with surface stitching and beadwork. Themes of visual optics, infinity, and science continue to pervade her work. Rebecca Medel maintains a studio in Tuscon, Arizona, and was elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2010.
