Event Volunteer – American Craft Fest St. Paul

Department: Events & Programs

Location: St. Paul, Minnesota

About the American Craft Council

The American Craft Council is a nationwide, membership-based nonprofit working to foster livelihoods and ways of living grounded in the artful work of the human hand, creating a more joyful, humane, and regenerative world. Building upon an 80+ year legacy of tradition and innovation, ACC is part of a growing coalition of organizations, makers, and advocates at the forefront of a movement that supports craft-centered livelihoods and ways of living—an American craft renaissance.

How you can help.

ACC relies on the support of numerous volunteers to produce American Craft Fest St. Paul, one of Minnesota’s most exciting summer events. Volunteer help in an array of important roles to make the event a success. Volunteering for this event is a great opportunity to meet and connect with your fellow craft enthusiasts, and artists from across Minnesota.

Learn about some of the things you might find yourself doing in this volunteer role.

  • Booth Sitting is a great way to meet artists, learn about their craft, and interact with event guests. Booth sitting is a service provided free of charge by the American Craft Council. Event exhibitors can have their booth attended by a volunteer or staff member while the exhibitor leaves to attend to their needs. While the artist is gone, the booth sitter can chat with guests strolling through the aisles, tell people that the artist will be right back, and answer simple questions about the event or perhaps the work (if possible). Booths are usually sat for about 15 minutes, but sometimes a little longer, depending on the specific need of the artist.

  • When artists are busy interacting with the public, selling their work, or perhaps demonstrating (depending on the event), they sometimes don’t get the chance to run a simple errand or make it to the information booth to ask a question. The Artist Support volunteer helps exhibitors by walking the aisles and interacting with artists, asking them if they need anything, answering questions, and running simple errands for them if needed. Depending on the event, the artist support volunteers sometimes end up assisting by providing impromptu booth sitting services when requested by the artist.

  • Many American Craft Council events require guests to register to attend. Handheld ticket scanners are used at the entrance of events to scan registration codes and sometimes physical tickets before attendees enter. Ticket scanning volunteers also help answer guest’s questions, sometimes direct them to different show locations, and are generally one of the first smiling faces our guests interact with at an American Craft Council event.

  • A volunteer floater is often the “jack of all trades” when it comes to volunteers. They often help out with a little bit of everything, including supporting ACC staff and event exhibitors. This role allows volunteers to see much of how an event runs “from the inside” and helps the American Craft Council keep things running smoothly.
