See how easy it is to make craft part your living space at our home décor exhibition, “Make Room: Modern Design Meets Craft.” With this year’s theme, “4 Elements,” interior designers create room vignettes inspired by select pieces of fine craft that express one of Mother Nature’s awe-inspiring elements – earth, air, fire, and water. Here’s a look at the stylish settings you’ll see on site. Mother Nature would be proud.

AIR

Designer: Brian Patrick Flynn
Design firm: Flynnside Out Productions
Inspirations: Vicki Essig, Mike Sluder
Design style: I love transitional and all-American design, and I enjoy featuring textiles in my work. I’m drawn to the organic and soft nature of fabric.
Vision: I love fluid shapes and materials that are light and airy. The textile piece by Vicki Essig was the perfect fit for a room that’s all about air. In fact, my entire space shares the same properties as this piece: lightness, bright-white coloring, and the feeling of being weightless and free.

EARTH

Designer: Julie Witzel, ASID
Design Firm: J Witzel Interior Design
Inspirations: Matthew Hatala, Kipley Meyer
Design style: I lean toward modern and classic, with some midcentury modern mix. I pay special attention to the architecture, balance, scale, light, and color of an interior space. Also, whenever possible, I like to incorporate natural material into the spaces I design.
Vision: I have a strong affinity for forms and textures, especially when the artist lets the natural material speak for itself. The selections I chose embody what people think of when they think of Earth – warm, natural colors, texture, and organic forms.

WATER

Designers: Robert Grayson, ASID, and Andrew Harris, ASID
Design firm: GraysonHarris Interiors + Design
Inspirations: Bruce Johnson, Hung Nguyen, Nicholas Yust
Design style: We try to assimilate the tastes of our clients in order to create unique, personal spaces for each project. Lately most of our projects have been on the contemporary, modern, and eclectic side.
Vision: We like the ceramic piece because it reminds us of the ash that is left from a fire. The metal wall piece is red hot and adds an amazing punch of color. The glass sculpture moves with the fluidity and complexity of flames. We chose to let the craft pieces dictate the design; therefore our vignette showcases the fire and ash feel of the pieces, while all other design elements will be supportive.

FIRE

Designers: Mark Williams, ASID, and Niki Papadopoulos, ASID
Design firm: Mark Williams Design Associates
Inspirations: Louise Harris, Bruce Johnson
Design style: Our work is always tailored, but warm and comfortable at the same time. We try to represent each of our clients’ personal styles through our curatorial process.
Vision: We love mixed media because the craft of interior design is all about taking individual items and combining them into a beautiful new whole. The two pieces we have chosen are vastly different in medium and style, but the simplicity of each piece really resonated with us.
