Artist Sheila Pepe’s grandmother and mother were skilled crafters, teaching her to crochet when she was seven. Honoring their legacy, Pepe uses what she calls “improvisational crochet”; incorporating shoelaces, yarn, nets, nautical tow line, rubber bands––anything that can be crocheted, knitted, or sewn. Several works using this technique are included in her exhibition Hot Mess Formalism, on view at Bemis through September 15. Serving as an inspirational backdrop, local artisans will share the stories of their generational craftsmanship through five-minute Pecha Kucha-style presentations consisting of 20 slides, automatically advancing after 15 seconds each.
