In this hands-on workshop you will gain a foundation in the process of papermaking, as well as explore the possibilities inherent in working with indigo as a material. Indigo is a color that is valued by cultures around the world. Discover the unique properties of working with indigo, as you create crisp patterns, rivers of fluid marks, and fields of thick, rich darkness on handmade paper.
After a thorough introduction to papermaking, you will produce papers using fibers that are strong enough to hold up when immersed in the indigo vat. Explore the range of surface qualities possible with various fibers, and fine tune your understanding of the beater to produce a portfolio of papers with an exciting range of tactile surfaces. You will use both traditional and experimental techniques in making marks and coloring paper.
