2018 San Francisco Show Awards of Excellence
A tradition established at the start of the American Craft Shows, the Awards of Excellence recognize and celebrate show artists in a few categories: overall work quality, booth design, and a Hip Pop emerging artist.
From a pool of more than 250 incredibly talented makers, only five were chosen to be honored with awards at our 2018 American Craft Show in San Francisco. Nancy Gardner, a jeweler, gallery owner, and studio manager at Mendocino Art Center served as the Awards of Excellence juror.
For quality of work, awards were given to jeweler Judith Kinghorn (booth 717), whose strong and gorgeous aesthetic carries through her innovative designs, textile artist Janet Chico (booth 226) and her incredibly well-made fiber and leather bags, and sculptor Tom Boardman (booth 720), whose kinetic wood sculptures are mesmerizing.
Taking home the award for booth design, which honors both quality of work and booth presentation, was metal sculptor Michael Szabo (booth 229), whose booth invites you in with its open spaces containing a bold display of his impressive, large-scale, decorative metal work.
Basketmaker Kathleen Heafey (booth 211-3) won the Award of Excellence for an emerging artist in our Hip Pop program. The juror described her work as a fun, fresh look at a traditional art form.
Congratulations to all of our recipients!
