Lois Moran was an administrator for the American Craft Council and a longtime editor of American Craft magazine. She retired from the organization in 2006 after 43 years of service, but continues to be involved in the field as a panelist, juror, and consultant. Moran, an honors graduate from Tobe-Coburn School for Fashion Careers, joined the Council in 1964 as the director of regional programs. She became the editor of the organization’s newsletter, Outlook, in 1966 and was promoted to director of research and education in 1968. In this role, Moran initiated Your Portable Museum, a large collection of slides featuring work by contemporary craft artists. Over the years, Moran continued to move up the ranks at ACC. She was named director of national programs in 1977, served for a short time as vice president of operations, and became editor of the freshly renamed and rebranded American Craft magazine in 1980. Moran helmed the publication for the next 26 years, gaining widespread recognition for her steady management and her role in articulating the value of craft. In addition to her responsibilities as editor, Moran also served as executive director of the Council from 1988 to 1990. Throughout her career, Moran maintained close and amiable correspondence with artists, writers, donors, and peers. A consummate record keeper, Moran kept meticulous files that include many of these letters and emails. Now permanently housed in the Council’s archives, these files show off her intelligence, rigor, and grace. Moran was honored with a 1993 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts and received the 2006 Founders’ Circle Award from the Mint Museum. She was elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2008.
