Explore NLM’s current exhibit "SPACELAB: An Interstellar Exhibit of Glass Art" and be inspired to design your own otherworldly creation in this hands-on workshop. Philadelphia-based artist Danielle Conyers of Escape Threads will lead an embroidery workshop to create a one-of-a-kind, hand-sewn pulsar map on a wood hoop canvas. The design interprets a pulsar map, the first message launched into outer space aboard the Pioneer 10 spacecraft. Originally designed by Carl Sagan and Frank Drake, the map depicts the relative location of our sun based on the known location of certain stars to guide extraterrestrial life to make contact with Earth.
Get exclusive, after-hours access to the SPACELAB gallery to view the artwork and then choose how to express your embroidered pulsar map with different colors and patterns. Danielle will teach a series of basic stitching techniques so you can design your own map. No previous stitching knowledge is necessary and all experience levels are welcome. This workshop is BYOB. Bring your friends and your favorite drink. All embroidery materials are included.
