Using sawdust in combination with other materials such as copper salts, metal, and masking slips, the saggar firing process produces special markings on ceramic surfaces. The possibilities of working with materials in this unconventional way are endless and produce results that encourage further experimentation.
This workshop will begin with an overview of the making and firing process, including which ceramic forms and sizes are best, ways to prepare surfaces, materials to put in the saggar to encourage specific markings, and what to expect during the firings on Monday and Tuesday. Open to students of all abilities and approaches, pieces can be thrown on the wheel or handbuilt. There will be no class on Sunday to allow for bisque firings.
Instructor: Patty Kochaver.
