"Seat of Learning" is an art installation investigating time, movement, memory, knowledge, and how we learn from material objects. The concept originated when the artists found a vintage school desk that encapsulated 20th-century early learning through its patina, material presence, and history of use. Gathering video interviews from a diverse range of individuals and objects from across the western United States and the Pikes Peak region, the artists will present a selection as creative content for the final installation. The immersive installation, built of a supportive framework stretched with translucent cloth, mirrors the phenomena of layered density or the sharp clarity of memory abiding in certain common objects. A raised entry ramp leads to a walkway that circulates around displays of grouped objects and eventually leads down to a lower central space of displays. Along the way, overlapping scrim walls build upon one another to create new shadings as they filter sound and light. The audio narratives and objects gathered from diverse, individual interviews build upon one another as participants move towards the center bringing awareness to the potency of objects and what we learn from them over time.
