"Tense Present"
Organized in conjuction with our 2019 conference, the multifaceted "Tense Present" exhibition brought the charged work and object stories of the 2019 ACC Emerging Voices Awards recipients to Philadelphia October 10 – 12.

The five finalists' work was put on display at South Philly's BOK in an exhibition curated by 2019 Emerging Voices scholar Sarah Darro. Recorded personal object narratives from all seven recipients could be experienced in the main hall of the conference. And, a party at Paradigm Gallery + Studio celebrated the release of the exhibition catalogue/mixtape.
Listen to the object stories
We asked the 2019 Emerging Voices Awards recipients to record a narrative about a significant object in their lives, an exercise in considering the implicit meaning that physical objects can carry. Participants in our "Present Tense: 2019" conference could step into a partitioned-off area of the main conference hall to experience these recorded objects stories, presented alongside the objects themselves.

See the artist installations
Originally a trade school built in 1936, BOK is now a richly layered space for small businesses, makers, community services, and more. Its historic "Girls Gym" provided the context for the "Tense Present" artist installations, featuring the charged work of the five Emerging Voices finalists. 2019 Emerging Voices scholar Sarah Darro curated the exhibition.
"'Tense Present,' staged exactly fifty years after 'OBJECTS: USA,' could be classified as 'post-object.' It is less about the final result and more about the work's conceptual basis as informed by process."
~ Sarah Darro, 2019 Emerging Voices scholar and "Tense Present" curator
Experience the mixtape release party
To celebrate the release of the "Tense Present" catalogue – a limited-edition artist multiple featuring a mixtape of the object stories – we threw a dance party at Paradigm Gallery + Studio. DJ Major Taylor, who mixed a track using the object story recordings, provided the beats for the event along with DJ Foxx Boogie while attendees mingled among Colossal's "Material Properties" exhibition.
