Benjamin Moore
Born in 1952 in Olympia, Washington, Benjamin Moore is a glass artist based in Seattle. Moore studied at Central Washington University in Ellensburg before completing his BFA in ceramics at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland (1974). He was introduced to glass by ACC Fellow Marvin Lipofsky while studying at CCAC. Interested in learning more, he opted to spend the summer of 1974 at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. There, he met ACC Gold Medalist Dale Chihuly, who became an early mentor. After his summer at Pilchuck, Moore went on to complete an MFA at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, where Chihuly was then head of the glass program. Throughout his career, Moore’s work has been a study in the formal and material qualities of glass, with timeless vessels as his ultimate goal. He has lectured and exhibited internationally, and he is recognized as a bridge between the American studio glass movement and Murano, Italy, the historical epicenter of Venetian glass production where Moore lived and worked for two years after completing his MFA. Moore has mounted solo exhibitions at museums and galleries along the West Coast and is represented in a number of collections, including the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. Moore was elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2009.
