Make Room Designer Spotlight: Elena Calabrese
American Craft Show in San Francisco
What is your company name? Elena Calabrese Design & Decor
What decade did you select and why?
This was an easy choice for me. I love all design from the '70s. There is something about the contrast of high-shine materials with organic, curvy lines – specifically in the furniture at that time – that feels very luxe, yet casual to me. Chic, but earthy. The interiors and music from that decade don't hold back, which I love.
What is your vision for the space?
My design is a cosmic lounge, a great place to kick back and be chic. The design is driven mainly by Calico's wall covering, Micro Cosmos, which speaks to the "In Space and Time" theme. These will be combined along with some key Milo Baughman pieces from my own collection.
What attracted you to the craft objects you’re featuring in your vignette?
I love Dave Strock's glass pieces for the prisma of color they have and Emily Dvorin's textural basket for its whimsical feel, as well as the pop of pink that will tie into the wallpaper. I was attracted to Scott Wynne's wooden credenza because it feels very refined, yet earthy, and is something I would incorporate into my own interiors.
What's your favorite design tip?
Don't be afraid to mix up styles, color, and textures to make a room interesting, but do pick one thing to keep consistent; this will give the space a calming and put-together vibe.
