Make Room Designer Spotlight: Sayre Victoria Ziskin
American Craft Show in San Francisco
What is your company name? SVZ Interior Design
What decade did you select and why?
I selected the 1950s as my decade because of the mix of pattern and color, sinuous shapes, and classic American kitsch that seem synonymous with the decade. There are several different looks when it comes to interior design from the '50s, but I wanted to go with the earlier midcentury, streamlined, modern look.
What is your vision for the space?
I plan on using a lot of pastels (pinks, dusty greens, and blues) in the space with floral accents and colorful, patterned furniture pieces. These colors are really emblematic of the period and capture the optimism of the 1950s and the post-war hopefulness that permeated the country.
What attracted you to the craft objects you’re featuring in your vignette?
I chose decorative items that fit within the era visually, with futuristic-yet-retro shapes and muted pastel colors.
What's your favorite design tip?
I always start a room with a single idea or item. It could be a vintage side table or a paint color to start with; and then spin off from there and select the surroundings. Always have a single touchstone when you start a space and use it to bring you back to where you started from.
What ACC show artists' pieces are you featuring?
James Aarons (bottom left), Evan Chambers (bottom right), Heather McCalla (top)
