Video: The Collaborative Relationship of Wence and Sandra Martinez
Library Salon Series
On June 14, we hosted our final spring Library Salon Series event with an effortless presentation by master weaver Wence Martinez and his vivacious wife Sandra, an talented symbolist painter. They spoke about their background, a truly magical, cross-cultural love story that started out as pure artistic collaboration. The partnership that has taken shape through the translation of Sandra’s paintings into Wence’s weavings has continued for the past 30 years in their charming studio and shop located in Door County, Wisconsin.
Wence and Sandra each talked about their individual work and the work they do together, as well as the details of starting their permanent studio and shop, their struggles with the craft trade show sale model, and how they have overcome difficulties to maintain their status as full-time working artists. Learn more in the video above and check back later this summer for our fall Library Salon Series lineup.
Presented by the American Craft Council, the Library Salon Series is a series of free public presentations exploring craft, making, and art.
This activity was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
